Traditional Trades Advancement Program Intern-Springfield Armory NHS

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Trades and Preservation Center are seeking one intern who will participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. This member will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

This intern will work alongside park staff at Springfield Armory National Historic Site to its colorful history in original buildings on their historic grounds.

Position Responsibilities will include:

Historic and Cultural Landscape Management Intern

Qualifications:
Applicant must have the ability to work around other using chainsaws and possibly motorized wood chippers, have the ability to use weed eaters, pruners, hand saws of various varieties, and assist with rope guides for tree work if needed.

Project Tasks:
• Interns will assist with the rehabilitation of the historic Springfield Armory grounds.
• Interns will replace trees and plant new shrubbery in select locations throughout the site.
• Interns will assist with bucking and disposal of downed trees and thatch around the site.
• Interns will assist a trained qualified arborist with tree care, however, will not be authorized to utilize a chain saw, per NPS Chainsaw Guidelines.
• All tools and equipment issued to and used by the interns will be returned the park in the same condition received except for normal wear and tear.
• Interns may also be required to perform additional duties as directed.

Minimum Requirements:
• Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including, lifting, or handling of objects over 50lbs using proper techniques.
• Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
• Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Must be a U.S. Citizen
• Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214
• A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation
• Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights
• Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day
• Have the ability to think critically and creatively
• Ability to commit to a four-month experience of combined training and hands-on work
• Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework. (Laptop available upon request)
